New knitter question!

Hi all! I am a newish knitter who is about to start on her first bag! I am stuck on the opening of the pattern: (it is a bag for all seasons from magknits!)

Cast on 25 stitches.
Slipping first st of every row, work 40 rows in stockinette stitch. Bind off.

Q: how do you slip a stitch? Does this matter? I have searched for an answer, but to no avail! Please help me!! I want this for a new dance bag.
I am also going to knit it in stripes, but I think (with help from here) that I have figured how.

much love
Ashley

Just slip the stitch to your other needle (as to knit) without actually knitting it. It will create a nicer edge.

oh, that makes sense. I have run across slipping stitchs for advanced knitters, but not the boring ole basic no nonsense stuff!

Thank you for your quick response!!

Oh, one more thing. When you work your purl rows, you want to slip the stitch as if to purl. (You slip as if to knit on the knit rows.) Hope that makes sense!

I was wondering the same thing actually! Thanks for asking!
