New Knitter Needs Help

Hi everyone, my name is Whitney and I’ve just recently started knitting. At the moment, I’m knitting rows as practice before I start my first project.

The two pictures shown are the front and back of my sample. I thought I was knitting the same throughout, but obviously I’ve changed something. The top two rows I did try purling just to see if there was a difference. Maybe I’m starting my knitting rows incorrectly? Can anyone give me some tips or insight as to what I’m doing wrong?

Thank you so much in advance.

You’re not doing anything wrong :grinning:
The lower part of the top photo is called stocking stitch(stockinette, stst) while the top rows are what all purl or all knit stitches looks like if you do this on both sides of the work, also called garter stitch using all knit sts. Looking at the lower part of the second photo on the reverse side, do you see how the knit st on the front is a purl st on the reverse side - this is something worth remembering for the future.
Your sts look lovely and even, well done you are doing very well and will soon be knitting all sorts of knitted goodies.
Be warned - knitting is seriously addictive lol :joy:

Thanks so much for your reply! It’s really helpful knowing what the stitches are called. :grinning:

I didn’t mean to change my knitting style from stockinette to knitting/purling though, so I will definitely look into that a little more.

Thanks again!

When knitting stockinette, in case of confusion over which stitch row you are to begin, look at both sides of your knitting - the knit side is flat and looks like rows of VVVVVVVVV’s while the purl side is lumpy and looks like small bumps or - - - - - - - -
Being able to read your sts will become very handy later on :grinning:
