New knitter; I don't understand this bit in my pattern

If there’s anyone that can help me here it’d be great. I’m new to knitting anything other than plain scarves!

I’m trying to follow a pattern for the first time and I don’t get this bit;

(Its the very first row actually! I thought I understood it and was knitting away until I realised I had WAY fewer stitches than I should have, and although it’s entirely possible that I dropped a few stitches, I didn’t drop that many!)

Cast on 73 stitches. (that bit’s fine!)

1st Row. *K2tog, yfwd, ref from * to last st, k1.

I’m pretty clueless, but eager to learn!

I just began to knit last month but is the yfwd the same as a yarn over? I did a block from the Knitting blocks book and the stitch pattern seems similar. It makes a lacy fabric with little holes.

The k2tog is a decrease but the yarn over is an increase so I should think you would have the same number of stitches in your first row (73) as you had in the cast on row.

Yes, just bring the yarn to the front between the needles and knit the next 2 stitches together. Having the yarn in front will create a yarn-over stitch that will become an eyelet.

Oops! I think what Ingrid meant to say was that you put the yarn over the needle, and THEN bring it forward between the needles. It’s one of those things that’s too easy to explain, so people tend to get mixed up about it. Try looking at the video, here-- it’s at the bottom of the increases page.

I do what Ingrid does for a yarn over (YO). I bring the yarn forward between the needles and then knit. It does go over the top of the right needle when you knit it. It has to come between the needles first.
