New knitter hoping to make Gryffindor scarf

Hello fellow knitting enthusiasts!!! I’m a knitting newbie. I basically still have no clue what I’m doing yet LOL. But I’ve got several books and have been watching the tutorials on youtube and I think I will have the hang of it soon. My main question is relatively simple but let me give you a smidge of background.
I wanted to learn how to knit so that I could make my favorite thing in the whole universe of fandom projects: Harry Potter scarves.
I’m a hard core potter head and I LOVE the Gryffindor and Slytherin scarves. My first project is to attempt at making the Gryffindor scarf for myself and my best friend to wear to a Sherlock convention in the fall.
So my question is, does anyone on here have any experience making Gryffindor (or just HP houses in general) scarves and would be willing to give me some advice? What sort of stitch and pattern should I use and where can I find properly detailed instructions to follow?
Thanks in advance!
~Mandy

Hi. Welcome to KH and to knitting. Knitting is a great hobby. If you go www.ravelry.com and join for free you can have access to all the patterns there, many of them free. A search on Gryffindor which includes scarves. Pick a pattern (you’ll probably want one of the simpler ones) and you can get lots of help with it right here.

Okee dokee; thank you!

I have another question I just thought of; do the scarves absolutely HAVE to be knitted in the round? Or can they be done on straight needles?

If you’re really new to knitting you might also want to check the Free Videos button and see what will be helpful. I don’t know if you’re already knitting at all or just learning to cast on. Do be sure to ask any questions you have, there are people who will help you figure it all out. Happy :knitting:

Have you got a particular pattern in mind? Scarves can be done on straight needles. Some are knitted in the round for specific reasons.

Welcome!
I made a Gryffindor scarf for my niece a while ago. The look from the movie is of a scarf knit in stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row, knitting flat). If you do that, you need to add a border of some very flat stitch like garter stitch (knit every row) to prevent the scarf from curling. Since I wanted the look of all knit sts without a border, I knit the scarf in the round (all knit sts) as a tube. That way, it was a double thickness for warmth, there was no curling and the authentic look was preserved.
