New knitter... HELP

First of all, ia m so freakin glad to have found this website… I bought this book from wal-mart about knitting and thought i could do it since I taught myself to crochet that way… boy was i wrong… I learn a lot better by watching someone do it and this is so cool b/c if I get confused or not understanding it, I can just replay it instead of asking someone “can you do that again” like 40 times… but I am finally getting the hang of it.

Question, I am wanting to make a striped afghan and want to know the best technique to use… please help me… I am only wanting to use 2 colors. Thanks so much.

i am not really replying to myself, i just forgot a question… what size needles do you guys recommend starting off with? please let me know… i think my needles are too big… and it is making it hard to start this project. Thanks.

Knitting Pattern Central has TONS of free AFGHAN PATTERNS. I would look through them and find one you like. Afghans are ALOT of time and work. If you dont LOVE it, you might get deathl bored.

If there are pattern instructions you dont understand, then the “abbreviations explained” tab, upper right, will help & link you to the right videos for that skill.

I would say that you would need to pick a yarn and use a needle size that is suggested for use by that particular yarn. When I first learned I was quite attracted to the “hairy” sorts of yarn with little tasselly things on them. They were pretty hard to use because I tend to think most beginners are probably tight knitters. I started on US8 just cheapo Red Heart yarn and it was fine. Some people say learning on bigger needles is easier, but I didn’t think so. Good luck!

I would use a number 7 or 8 needle and worsted size yarn. The key thing is to buy a light color so that you can see what you’re doing. Good old Red Heart is what I started with.
