New knitter, clarification on a pattern needed

Hello everyone.

I am very new to knitting, and I have a pattern for booties that says to “work an extra k 1 at beg and end of every row”. I think this means that I just knit the first two stitches in every row, but I am not positive. Can anyone help?

Thank you!

You put 1 stitch to the beginning, and one at the end, (2 more than pattern says) and they are not included in the pattern, so you have to remember to do them.

Correct me, if wrong.

Ok. So if the pattern says K1 P1, I’m actually going to K 2 P1?

In my opinion, yes. At least this it what it sounds like. Often, pattern exclude border stitches, so they tell you to knit x stitches on each side. Sometimes those stitches are included in the cast on, but in your case, as they say “extra stitches”, I guess they are excluded, but not sure.
Would be best if you counted the stitches in the pattern and compare with the stitches of the cast on. If they are identical, then you have to do extra stitches (more), and if the stitches in the pattern are the number of stitches you cast on + 2, then you don’t have to cast on extra stitches.

Hope that helps…
