New here and looking for some opinions

Hi
I am new to this forum but I have been knitting for several years. I recently was give some 100% wool hand painted yarn in some really beautiful colors. The problem is it is pretty rough. What should I do with this yarn? It is pretty but I would hate to put a lot of time into something and then not be able to use it. I am not really familliar with wool, will it soften when it is washed? Any and all thoughts appreciated.
Thanks
Wendy

Hi!! Welcome
Unless it is superwash wool it will felt…in that case I would make something felted, like a purse or a cute pair of slippers:) How much yardage do you have? Feltable wool is kind of rough usually so I think that is what you have;)

I have about 800 yards of each color. I have never knit slippers before…are they hard?

This would look great in some handpainted yarn!

Amanda’s Squatty Sidekick

It takes less than 200 yards to make one bag and it works up so fast!

You could also knit up a swatch and try handwashing as you would a sweater and see if it softens up.

It should not felt if you hand wash in cool water. I have heard of people using hair conditioner to soften yarn. Try a swatch.

I would suggest a purse, something that you won’t wear too close to your skin–have fun, whatever you decide, it sounds like really nice yarn.

A vest?

A felted purse would be great. If you need a pattern just google felted purse pattern and you will be amazed at how many free patterns you will find.:knitting:

a vest would probably be a good idea
or like someone else said, amanda’s squatty sidekick
they would both look good :yay:
hope this inspires you!!

Hi, I’m brand new to this forum. Couldn’t help noticing your Maltese puppy, I have one too. She will be 3 in Feb. Aren’t they just the greatest dog. Mine gets jealous when I knit. I want to make a coat for her sometime.
