Hi Everyone,
I’m new to the forum and fairly new to knitting. A co-worker taught a bunch of us a few months ago and I love it. I’ve made several scarves, a shawl, a blanket, etc. but I’m having trouble with a poncho for my daughter. The poncho is knit in the round, which I have finally mastered getting a nice even round. Here is my problem. The pattern has you divide up the 52 sts in half to 26/26.
I do the pattern and each time I’m coming out with 24 sts on the needle rather than 26. The pattern is this:
- (K1, YO) twice, (slip 1, K2tog, PSSO, YO, K1, YO) across to next marker; repeat from * once more: 56 sts.
Can someone help me count out those stitches? I’m getting very frustrated. Maybe I’m not reading the pattern correctly??
Okay, I just worked
- (K1, YO) twice, (slip 1, K2tog, PSSO, YO, K1, YO) across to next marker; repeat from * once more: 56 sts.
and achieved 54. Doing that seq once more, as directed, would net you 56.
K1 (0), YO (+1), K1, (0), YO (+1), slip 1 (0), k2tog (-1), PSSO (-1), YO (+1), K1 (0), YO (+1). 52+1+1-1-1+1+1=54. (Value in parentheses is what you inc or dec in seq.) One repeat would add 2 more sts=56. Make sense?
HTH,

The numbers have been bugging me too. Post a link for sure and let everyone pick away at it. It’s probably something silly that’s right in front of our noses. Don’t get frustrated! You can do it and we can help:)
Thanks, Cam. The pattern is from a book and I am casting on 52 stitches (56 was a typo). I knit the first round and place markers after 26. I typed the line of the pattern where I am getting lost. I should have 26 stitches between each marker but when I work that row, I have 24 stitches instead of 26. It’s not making sense to me.
I thought if someone could explain that row (not the stitches per say, but how it adds up to 26 stitches.
Sorry if I’m not making sense. Like I said, I am pretty new to this.

Make sure you’re doing all the YOs…there are 4…to add sts in.
Not sure how much more specific I can be than
K1 (0), YO (+1), K1, (0), YO (+1), slip 1 (0), k2tog (-1), PSSO (-1), YO (+1), K1 (0), YO (+1). 52+1+1-1-1+1+1=54. (Value in parentheses is what you inc or dec in seq.) One repeat would add 2 more sts=56.
If you work all the YOs (4), and the 2 decs (k2tog, PSSO), you’re gaining 2 sts. 52+4=56-2=54. Next round 54+4=58-2=56. You’re supposed to end up with 56.

I am casting on 52 stitches (56 was a typo)
So, are you supposed to end up with 52 after working that row? Or are you starting with 52, adding incs to end up with 56?
This line
- (K1, YO) twice, (slip 1, K2tog, PSSO, YO, K1, YO) across to next marker; repeat from * once more: 56 sts.
would suggest you end up with 56, which is what I came up with.
