Hi my name is Liz, I really have only just picked up some needles this evening, can someone please help me regarding the correct way to hold your needles and yarn, I have read somewhere that the way you hold the yarn contributes to the final tension?

Don’t worry about your tension at this point. That will evolve as you learn.
Go up to the top of this page and click on Basic Techniques. There is an assortment of videos there for beginners. Sit back, relax, and try different things. You’ll find the best way for you to hold your needles and yarn. Hang in there!

:waving: Welcome to the forum!! Ingrid is right when I started I would have to play with the yarn to see how to hold it for me… when I go to my LYS to knit everyone holds their yarn/needles different its just what is more comfy for you… 
This site is a goldmine of information regarding knitting!!! Definately check out the videos. When you get really good (I’m not quite there yet) there are some cute paterns here too. Good luck!
I’m a beginner, too, and Amy’s videos are excellent for people like us!!! I use them, along with a how-to book, and am plugging along… welcome to the world of knitting! 
The “short demo of a complete project” was very helpful to me. I watched it, then watched the casting on and knit stich videos, and started immediately. It took me ten tries to make that “double cast on” work correctly, but within the hour I was making my first scarf.
So far, each yarn that I’ve knit with, I’ve had to hold a different way due to varying slipperyness.
Hi everybody, thanks for all your replies. What a great site for encouragement I think I bought the wrong yarn to start with though. It has a velvet feel to it DK but no stretch in the yarn and difficult to see the stitches. Well you live and learn!

Some of the ‘novelty’ yarns are fun to look at but difficult to knit. If you can get yourself a ball of regular old yarn, you’ll be able to see your stitches so much easier.

I think you have to find the best way for you, in regards to how to hold the needles and yarn. I tried holding my yarn the way a book explained and it seemed to complicated for me. I just found what worked for me and my tension is fine!

Welcome! I’ve been knitting tons of small projects for three years and two months now and have finally settled on my way to hold my yarn! When I first learned I was only concerned with making the stitch correct. I never even looked at my fingers till someone asked me what style I do! And once I started watching others knit I developed my own style. Rome wasn’t built in a day. 
Its a great stress reliever. I wont say how many times I threw my needles down that first day, but they kept calling me back.
