After checking guage, I went up a needle size on a sweater that I’m working on. Do I also need to go up a needle size for the neck and arm hole ribbing or use the suggested needle size? The body is knit stitch and the ribbing in knit/purl.
Thanks!
Good question. Have you done the ribbing on the bottom of the sweater? A smaller needle will pull the ribbing in more. Is that the look you want? You could go up a needle size to match the difference in needle sizes suggested in the pattern. It’s all up to you.
Thanks for responding! This is my first project other than a simple scarf.
I did go up for the ribbing at bottom and I’m worried it might look a bit loose. So I wasn’t sure if that was the wrong thing to do.
Ribbing does tend to look a bit loose anyway, it’s the nature of the stitch and one of the reasons many patterns callmforna needle which is smaller than the one for the main nody of the sweater. As you progress with knitting your ribbing will become neat with practise and there are also options of switching ribbing on different needles to then decide which you like best rather than following a pattern to the letter.
What sweater are you making?
Thank you. I am working on the Novice Slipover Vest by Petite Knit.
Welcome to the forum!
You don’t have to go up a needle size when you increase the main needle size but it’s fine to do so.
If you tighten up on the purl stitch following the knit stitch, it’ll neaten up the ribbing. See about 3:30 min in this video.
That’s a nice slipover design.
Sorry about all the typos is my messages.
Thank you!
Good luck! Whatever you decide to do will be the right way.
