Needle size?

I am doing a roll striped hat. I was supposed to do the first stripe in my smaller needle than switch to the larger needle to finish. Somehow (??) I did the frist section with the larger needle–can I just finish the project with the smaller needles?
I would prefer to do that because I am a beginner, and therefore doing the hat on straight needles and my smaller ones are longer.

Thanks for your help!!

you would usually start a project (a hat) with the smaller needle size because that would be a ribbing row, and then switching to larger needles, would mean that your work would be smaller (tighter) on the band and larger (looser) on the main portion.

Depending on the pattern, I’m not sure if you should continue on smaller needles. Is it actually possible to go up 1 or 2 needle sizes instead?

Really, it would depend on your gauge swatch. Did you do one of those?

Well it depends… if the pattern is top down, then you might start on the larger ones. Or the pattern may say to CO with the larger ones…

Anyway, irishgirl, you should be okay as long as the hat will fit, you’ll have to knit more rows for length probably.
