Needle Size Discrepancy Question

What would you do if the pattern reads:

One pair each Mary Maxim needles No. 8 and No. 1 (American No. 5 and No. 13)

But, wait a minute, the conversion charts for mm to American sizes tell me that 8mm is a size 11 needle???

Would you use the 11 or the 13?

Diane

I’d do a swatch, that way I’d know if it was either or neither.

Could it be that the Mary Maxim needles are the old UK sizing (is from the old pattern shrug pattern?)

In which case a UK 8 is about a US 6 and a metric 4 mm, and a UK 1 is a 7.5 mm or between a US 10 1/2 and 11.
