Need some more help with this pattern please

I’ve been working on this pattern. For some reason when I get to the 42nd row, I come up with 8 extra stitches at the end of the pattern repeat rather 3. Can anyone please tell me what I might be doing wrong? Thanks.
42nd Row. K 3, over, K 1, over, * K 6, over, K 1, over, repeat from * 4 times, K 3.

I think I saw in your other post that “over” meant YO…since those are increases it makes sense that you’d have more. Or are you saying that even accounting for the increases you still have more?

I mean that there’s a extra stitches than there should be when I get to the end of the row. It says that I’m supposed to increase at the end of each row in the last stitch, so I’ve been doing that. In the pattern in says that I’m supposed to the "* K 6, over, K 1, over, repeat from * 4 times. And then it says that I’m supposed to knit 3 stitches at the end of the row. But instead of there being 3 stitches, there’s 8. I’m so confused. :??

:?? Sorry I can’t help. I think you’re brave to do a vintage pattern at all. I’ve seen similar ones that weren’t so confusing. Or seem to be less…I haven’t done them.

lol thanks. It’s important to me, because my great grandma had made it back in the 60’s or 70’s, and I’ve always admired the blanket. I was born exactly a year after she died, so I guess I’ve always felt a connection to her. My Mom has always called me her gift from Grandma.

At the end of this row, you should have 35 sts plus the inc for 36 total. Maybe you didn’t do enough repeats of (K 6, over, K 1, over), that takes 7 sts and 1 for the inc will use up 8 altogether.

hmmmm…I come up with 44 stitches… :frowning:

Okay, let’s break it down -
K 3 = 3 sts
over is +1 = 4
K 1 =5
over +1=6 (you began with 4 and added 2 more = 6)
*K6, over, K 1, over, repeat from * 4 times (begins with 7 and adds 2 more every repeat times 4 is 36 and I’m an idiot I think… I was counting what you began with and not what you end up with. Okay going on - so you have 36 sts here plus 6 is 42)
[inc] uses 1, adds 1 for 2 sts = 44
and K 3 equals 47 total.

Hi Crazyknitter83, I admire you and I certainly admire your great grandmother for attempting this pattern. The only way I can get it to work is to increase the number of repetitions of the sts between the * *. The change starts on row 24 where the pattern calls for 6 repeats: increase it to 7 repeats (the reason for this is that row 22 must have a total of 23 sts. Row 23 ends with 24 st and so row 24 must end with 25 sts. The only way for that to happen is to increase the repeats to 7.)
The following rows 25-35 increase by just the added end stitch so row 35 ends with 36 sts. For row 36 to work out to 37 sts, you again need to increase the number of repeats from 10 to 11. Rows 37 to 41 increase by just the added end stitch so row 41 has 42 sts.
Now fabulous row 42: again you need to increase the number of repeats from 4 to 5. In the case of this row there is a gain of sts due to the yo’s (2 yo’s + 2x5repeats + 1 increase =13sts inc
(or 42 sts from the previous row + 13 =55 at the end of row 42).
This total number of sts makes sense of row 43 (again you need to increase the number of repeats from 4 to 5) and you end with 56 sts.
I tried it on needles and it works but it will increase the size of your square (or diamond) and I’m not sure how that will work. You’ll just have to see what the shape and size of the single square is. There may be other ways to make sense of the pattern but this was the best I could come up with.
If you have the original blanket, count the number of eyelets (yo’s) in the first yo row (row 24).

42nd Row. K 3, over, K 1, over, * K 6, over, K 1, over, repeat from * 4 times, K 3.

Alright, this row is saying you have six (6) stitches, then you work a repeat of a total of thirty-six stitches (36) , then you knit three… that’s a total of fourty-five (45) for the entire row. If that’s written correctly, the over does mean yarn over, etc. you should have 45 stitches on that row when completed… as for what I counted.

What isn’t mentioned in the row instructions is that you have to do a kfb increase at the end of the row (before the edge sts) so that adds 2 more st and you end up with 47.

Yeah, I’ve been adding the increases in there every row. It says somewhere in there that the increases won’t be mentioned but you’re to increase one stitch at the end of each row until the 61st row. I’m going to just try what salmonmac said, and just add a another repeat of the pattern. That’s the only thing that really seams to make sense. I don’t care if it’s a bit bigger, so long as you still get the same look.
