Need some help getting started

I am a new knitter… I’ve only completed two things so far. I want to knit this sweater for my dd. I’m using Lang Yarn, Tosca, 50 g/ca.92 m. I have size 9, 16" circular needles.

This pattern doesn’t have much of what i am used to seeing, (needle size, how much yarn is needed, etc), so I really don’t know where to start. Then the first instructions say, “with smaller nedles CO…” will I be using different needle sizes?

Any help getting started would be greatly appreciated!

actually all the materials you need are listed over in that box where you can buy the stuff. Looks like you need size 6 and 7 needles. I would certainly do a gauge swatch though to make sure you can get to the gauge needed. The pattern suggests 20 stitches on size 7 needles.

The yarn you are using says the gauge is 3 stitches per inch on size 10.5 needles. The yarn they used says 4 stitches per inch on size 7.

There is no way thhis yarn is 3 stitches per inch. I knitted a hat out of the same yarn and it is much more than that. On the label, it says 12 stitches x 17 stitches in a 10 cm X 10 cm… that is a 4" x 4", right?

well this is what i found on that yarn…

Tension: 12 stitches to 4 inches (10 cm) with a 7 mm (US 10½ to 11) needle

i just divided it to get down to 1 inch. that’s why i am saying that you are going to need to swatch that out to get to the right gauge. the yarn you are using seems to be much thicker than the yarn used in the pattern.

I just did a swatch and I am getting 16 stitches in 4". Should I go to a larger needle, or do you think this is ok?

If the gauge of the pattern is 5 stitches per inch and you’re getting 4, your sweater is going to be much too big.

Think of it this way. If you have 100 stitches at 5 st per inch, you’ll have 20 inches of knitting.

If you have 100 stitches at 4 st per inch, you’ll have 25 stitches of knitting.

You want your stitches to be smaller so 5 will make an inch, so you’ll need to go down a needle size.

I started working on this pattern and I’ve realized that I need to knit this in the round. The yarn I have is striped and I know that if I don’t do it in the round, the front and back stripes won’t match.

How would I go about converting this pattern to knit in the round. Or is it even possible? LOL

I actually found a sweater that was knit in the round, but the designer won’t give out the instructions for it. All she says about it is, "It doesn’t get much easier. I picked the yarn to match my sons fair, blue-eyed coloring, knit a gauge swatch, measured him (with room to grow) and knit this sweater in the round. The body and sleeves are knit as three separate tubes, joined together at the armholes and then decreased for the yoke with a K2, K1, SSK raglan shaping. Easy as one-two-three."

I don’t understand how she did the yoke. It seems the rest is pretty easy, though.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
