Need quick pattern help

I’m making the fingerless gloves in “Not Just Socks”. I just put the gusset sts on waste yarn for holding. So I’ve got a big gap between sts just knitted and sts next to be knitted. I’m fine with that, it all makes sense. I’m stuck though, the pattern says: “CO 1 st to bridge the gap”. I feel like a dork, but I’ve been sitting here looking at this for 20 minutes and I can’t figure out how to cast on a stitch to bridge the gap. I feel like it would be easier just to keep knitting as if there is no gap but then I’ll be one stich short. HELP!!

PS: I won an eBay auction for six pairs of 24" addys for $9.99!! Even with the $28.99 shipping I think that’s a great deal!! (right? )

You can either pick up one st, do a backwards loop CO, or turn the needle and knit on a st, then turn back again.

Thank you Sue, but I’m still confused. Is it okay to just knit the next stitch across the gap and then add a stitch?

You would need to add the stitch before the next one, I think, to fill in the gap.
