Taken from my latest blog post:
I’m making great progress on the socks I started the other day with the new yarn from Knitpicks. I decided to loosely follow the sizing and heel instructions from the Tulip and Gingham socks pattern for the Simple Stripes. However, the heel instructions have got me perplexed. I’ve turned heels with short rows before with rather good luck, but the way this pattern is written is leaving me with a rather wonky turn. I’ll get all my purl turning rows complete, only to have 6 stitches left on the knit rows that need to be dealt with. Like so–
No, this is not my new sock. This is me “swatching” the heel to see if I can figure it out (I decided to switch to some other sock yarn that will never be made into socks–it’s acrylic, need I say more?-- after I ripped out my heel twice.) But, I had the same thing happen both times with the actual heel.
So, I’m giving you the heel instructions only to see if any of you knitters out there can figure out where the hell I’m screwing up.
Heel worked over 30 stitches.
Heel Row 1: Turn work. SL 1, p across heel sts. Turn.
Heel Row 2: Sl 1, K 28, turn. (1 st will be left on the needle)
Heel Row 3: Sl 1, P 27, turn. (1 st will be left on the needle)
Heel Row 4: Sl 1, K 26, turn. (2 sts will be left on the needle)
Heel Row 5: Sl 1, P 25, turn. (2 sts will be left on the needle)
Continue as above, working 1 less stitch in each row before turning, until 9 sts rem between turns. End with a K row. Does this mean another row where you Sl 1, K 8?
Turn Heel
Heel Turning Row 1: Sl 1, P 9, Sl the next st, pick up and purl 1 st from the row below, sl these 2 sts back on the left needle, P those 2 sts tog, turn.
Heel Turning Row 2: Sl 1, K 9, Sl the st, pick up and knit 1 st from the row below, pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch, turn.
Heel Turning Row 3: Sl 1, P 10, Sl the next st, pick up and purl 1 st from the row below, sl these 2 sts back on the left needle, P those 2 sts tog, turn.
Heel Turning Row 4: Sl 1, K 11, Sl the next st, pick up and knit 1 st from the row below, pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch, turn. Continue, repeating Heel Turning Rows 3-4, working one more st before repeating the slip-pickup-k or p together sequence, until all of teh sts on the heel needle have been worked. End with a P row.
Whether or not I end up using this heel on the Simple Stripes socks isn’t as important as figuring out where I’m going wrong so that the Tulip socks can be knit with the heel as written. I’ve already checked Knitpicks to see if they had any errata for this pattern, but since it’s relatively new, I’m not finding anything.
I realize that I’ve been absent from the boards for a while (planning a wedding will do that to you), I’m hoping that I can call upon the mad skillz of my fellow knitters here.
