Need Help

I just joined because I am stuck on an baby afghan project and I cannot even figure out how to ask my question. So here goes. I am knitting a Noah’s Ark afghan that includes knitted animals and the ark to apply to the afghan once it is finished. The instructions simply say to sew them on using the picture as a guide. But sew it on with what? What do you guys feel would be the best to secure them with making the afghan look ugly?

I have done a little of this sort of thing where you knit a sort of applique and then sew it on to a knitted item. I have not done it on something where both sides will show like your blanket, but I still think I would try the same sort of technique. Since the back will show you might try using the background color of yarn for your sewing “thread” with a big eyed needle (a sharp one is nice since you want to divide the yarn). I would work from the front and try doing little overcast stitches from the ark to the background. Try keeping the stitches quite close together (like 1/8") but when you sew through the background knitting (the blanket itself) don’t sew through the whole layer, but just divide the yarn and stay on the surface. Try that and see if it works.
