Need help

I am new to knitting thanks to my sister and I am really excited about it. But I am having a couple of problems that I just cannot seem to get under control.

The biggest problem is that I am getting some crossed stitches that look like a V on the needle. I hope that makes sense. I don’t know how I am doing this.

Also, every so often, I come to a stitch on the left needle that is HUGE. It basically looks like a ladder but it should be a stitch. How did I do this?

Oh, I am only working in garter stitch right now.

Thank you to anyone who can help me.

I suspect you are not slipping the knitted stitch off correctly. Make sure when you knit that you completely pull the yarn through the loop and then slip the stitch off the left needle.

I’m not sure exactly. It could be that you dropped a stitch or it could just be loose tension. Tension is something that come with practice.

Welcome to KH!

With the big loop, you could have wrapped your yarn around twice instead of once. Sometimes this is done on purpose, but I think you didn’t.

I’m not quite sure what you mean by pulling the yarn through completely. how is it possible to not pull it through all the way? I’m am thinking that since I don’t understand what you mean, that there’s a very good chance that it the mistake I am making.

Thank you for the responses…what a wonderful community.

When you put the needle into the st, wrap the yarn and pull it through, you may not be dropping the left stitch off the needle.

Also, when you put your right needle through the stitch and when you bring it back out, be sure you’re not picking up part of the stitch below. I used to do that a lot and it would give me a stitch that looked like what you’re describing.

Ok, I understand what you are saying about dropping the left stitch. I am doing that correctly. I think this is what I may be doing…

“Also, when you put your right needle through the stitch and when you bring it back out, be sure you’re not picking up part of the stitch below.”

Also, I am using a super bulky yarn that is wonderful to work with but you cannot really see the stitches so it is hard to figure out what I’ve done. I guess it’s time to practice on the good ol’ cotton washcloths until I get consistent. Thank you again for your help…I will see how it goes while keeping these tips in mind.

Super bulky can be easy to see the stitches as long as it’s not fuzzy, a light color and you use big needles - like size 13 or 15.
