Need Help!

Hello All!

I’m VERY new to knitting, so please excuse this if it’s a silly question. I know the “basics” of knitting (translate: I can knit a scarf  ), but what I’m wanting to do is knit a long rectangular shawl with horizontal striping (not verticle). So, to do this, I would need to cast on a LOT of stitches - for a very long starting row. Is there a special kind of needle I should use to do this? Or, is it just impossible to knit a shawl horizontally?

Thank you!!!
Amy

You can do that! What you need to use is a long circular needle and knit as if you are knitting flat, rather than joining and knitting in a tube. It’s done all the time for large projects.

Why thank you very much for your quick reply! I understand now and can’t wait to tackle my shawl!

I’m so glad I found this forum!
