Need help with "without breaking yarn, cast on 14 sts with small dpn"

Hi,
This is my first post! Thanks for accepting me.

I’m just getting started on the Bayshore Cardigan pattern and need some help.

After separating out the sleeves from the body in this top down raglan hoodie it says “Body & Trim
Work 3 (3, 3, 5, 5) rows in pattern as set, ending
with a RS row.
Without breaking yarn, cast on 14 sts with
smaller dpn.
R1: K13 sts, k2tog (1 st from dpn & 1 live st
from body), turn.
R2: K14
Repeat R1 & R2 until all live sts from body have
been used up, ending with R1.
Bind off kwise”

The part I need help with is the R1: K13 sts, k2tog (1 st from dpn & 1 live st
from body), turn.

I know how to cast on in the middle of the row, but I don’t understand is the orientation of the dpn and live stitches. This is just not making sense to me.

Please help!

Thanks,
Rachael

Welcome to KH!
Once you’ve cast on the sts at the beginning of a WS row, you’ll be knitting the lower border. This border is at a right angle to the body of the sweater. Knit 13sts from the dpn, then k2tog to join the border to the body and turn. You’ll essentially be knitting back and forth on the dpn and at the same time joining to the body every other row.

Hi,

Thank you so much for the quick and well explained explanation. That certainly makes sense.

Thanks again!
