Hi, I’m new here, and am hoping someone can help me.
I am trying to knit the baby hat pattern on the Lion Brand Velvetspun yarn. I’ve done it twice now, and pulled it out both times, due to the cast on edge not being elastic enough to actually fit a baby’s head.
The first time, I cast on the required stitches with size 10.5 needles, and there was no give at all. The second time, I cast on looser, with size 11 needles, and used a cable cast on, and still don’t see how a baby could wear this.
I’d really like to make a few of these, so if anyone has any other suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
Here is the link to the pattern. I really want to use this yarn, as it was an impulse buy, and I need to justify it to my husband. I think part of the problem is that there is little to no elasticity to the yarn.
Did you try it on the size 10 needles? It’s a roll brim so there’s no stretchiness as with a rib, but you might try ribbing. The size 11 needles would give it some stretchiness, but you have to keep the CO loose, maybe try a knit cast on.
I did try it on size 10.5 and size 11 needles. I don’t want a lot of stretchiness, but there was absolutely no give at all. I thought that a cable cast on was a little more flexible than a knit cast on? I guess I just don’t keep it loose enough, as the reviews on the pattern site raved about the pattern (it is a quick knit, I finished in about an hour, both times!) and no one else mentioned my problem. I’ll have another go at it in a couple of days. In the mean time, I will just switch projects! No use getting frusrated.
I have only been knitting for about 6 mo. so I thought I was the problem with the Velvetspun. I have started the hat 4 or 5 times and am about to give up. I purchased the kit from Lion Brand on sale to make the hat and cardigan. Try knitted and long tail cast on, larger needles for the cast on, nothing has helped.
I am sorry to hear that you are having problems, but glad to hear that it is not just me!
I changed gears, and made the Velvet Spun Bunny Blanket Buddy instead, which I finishd knitting last night. Today’s plan is to stitch, stuff and embroider it.
The drawback to switching is that it takes 2 balls of yarn, which I happened to have had, but I realize that you might not. I was really disappointed that I couldn’t make the hat work, because I might’ve gotten 3 or 4 hats from the same amount of yarn.
