Need help with this sock!

Hey Everyone,

I’m new to this site and to “chatting” so forgive me if I’m in the wrong place doing the wrong thing

I’m knitting my first sock, and the pattern I’m using can be found at www.canadianliving.com/crafts/knitting/peace_fleece_classic_wool_socks_to_knit

I am at the Heel Gusset. I am only using one color, and I knit across the Heel Flap - - no problem yet…I used the same needle to pick up 10 stitches, which left me with 20 st on Needle 1. I then used another needle and knit across needles 2&3 which left me with 22 st on Needle 2. Using another needle I picked up 10 st which is what I have on Needle 3. I then, (back to normal dp needle method), used a new needle and knit across the 20 st on Needle 1.

Seems to me I have been following the directions right, I have the correct number of stitches (52), but the next area where the pattern is in sub-parentheses, WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THAT? AM I SUPPOSED TO DIVIDE MY STITCHES TO MATCH THAT? I’M SOOOO CONFUSED!!:??

The following is what I found when I tried to access that site:

We’re sorry – that link no longer works on CanadianLiving.com.

Unfortunately some of our old links will no longer work on the new CanadianLiving.com website. Please use the search box at the top right of this page to find what you’re looking for, or click Contact Us below and we will try to help.

I wish I could help you but without seeing the pattern, I dont think Ill be much help!

I would highly recommend Silver`s Sock Tutorial. It got me through my first, second and third pair of socks. She describes each step in great detail and includes photos as well. Good luck with your sock knitting!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for looking - - Let me see if I’ve saved it. It’s odd because I was just there last week and found it. Can you try going to just the main site Canadian Living and working in to the pattern that way? I will too…

I’ve been waiting so patiently, (not), at my computer for help with this…

O.K. I found it by going to the Main Page/Crafts/Knitting. Then it’s on Page 3, and 18 pattterns down…

What is the pattern called please? That would help me find it…

(DOH) Sorry about that - - the name would help wouldn’t it!?
“Peace Fleece Classic Wool Socks”

OK I`m on the main craft section, page 3 and it is a dried bean and seed frame.

The instructions read as follows:

Place the next 20 (22, 24, 26) sts on Needle 1 for Heel Flap. Distribute remaining sts evenly on remaining two needles.

This means needle 1 has 30 stitches and the other remaining stitches are split in two on needles 2 and 3. The 30 stitches will be the top of your foot and the stitches on needles 2 and 3 will be the bottom of the foot.

According to this pattern you should have 30 stitches on needle 1, and 11 stitches on needles 2 and 3 (that`s 11 stitches on each needle making it 52 stitches total count on all needles).

Is that more clear for you? If not, just ask and I will try to help if I can!

Also: if you have already knit across those stitches, then taking needle 3, slip stitches knitwise onto needle 3 from needle 2 until you have an even number on both needles. That should set you straight!

Good luck!

LOL!!! Too Funny!!!
From Craft you have to go to “Knitting” on the side menu.

Thanks for the laugh - - I REEEAAALLLY needed it!

I’m actually past that. I am on Heel Gusset and stuck at the bottom of the first paragraph. I have completed through and understand then knit across 17,(20-which is the one I’m doing),22,25) sts on Needle 1]–46,(52,56,62) sts. It’s the following sentence that confuses me: [26,(30,32,36) sts on Needle 1;10(11,12,13 sts on Needle 2: 10(11,12,13) sts on Needle 3]. Do I distribute the stitches to match this? Because that’s not what I have, and what I have matches what I’ve just completed.

Yes you would distribute the stitches so they match that line in the pattern.

You need to end up with 30 stitches on needle 1, 11 on needle 2 and 11 on needle 3 in order for your sock to work out, according to that pattern.

May I again suggest to you that when you are finished this pair of socks, you try Silver`s Sock Tutorial. I put the link to it in the post above. It shows you how to create a sock, in several different weights of yarn, and in several different sizes. They are plain socks, but they give you the basic construction of knitting a sock in great detail, step by step, with pictures attached to show you if you get stuck. If you do get stuck, you can either contact Silver or any of us that knits socks on KH. We will be glad to help you out.

Okidoke - - I will first go to the Sock Tutorial and see if this whole distributing thing has a method.

Thank you so much for your time and help!!!

No problem. Silver shows you in detail how to distribute the stitches. I am sure you will find it very helpful when learning to knit socks. Without her tutorial, I would never have been able to pump out the socks like I have been doing since January!

In looking at the tutorial, I think I’ve messed up somewhere. There was never a time when I had four needles with stitches on them.

Though I feel like ripping this out entirely and trying a “simpler” sock pattern, I’ll just rip out to the Heel Turn and start over. I REALLY want to learn this - - and it can’t be that hard, right?

Its not and you will be proud of yourself once you have mastered it. Perhaps try using Silvers method with the other patterns stitch count. That might help. Good luck! Dont give up, it IS worth it in the end.

No - - I WILL NOT GIVE UP!! I am however going to rip this one completely out and start over with the Silvers Tutorial. It’s great that they have printable directions.

So here I go…And again, thank you for all your help!

You are most welcome. Anytime!!!

Good luck with the socks! I know you will be hooked as soon as you finish that first sock. Silver`s tutorial is so easy to follow, you will be whipping out socks in no time flat. I know I am!!!
