Need help with Sock Yarn One-Skein Wonders pattern for G. W. bonnet

Attempting to knit the G. W. bonnet pattern in the One-Skein Wonders book by Melissa Morgan-Oakes, but do not understand a stitch. Emailed the designer, but no response.

The cross stitch pattern is:
Row 1 (ws): knit
Row 2: knit
Row 3: P1, *(P1 wrapping yarn twice around needle) four times, p1; repeat from * to end of row
Row 4: K1, cross 4, *k1 into stitch 2 rows below, cross 4; repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Repeat rows 1-4 for pattern.

Special abbreviations: cross 4–slip next 4 stitches to right-hand needle, dropping extra loops. Slip 4 elongated stitches back to left-hand needle. Cross 4th stitch over other 3 stitches and knit it. Cross 3rd stick over remaining 2 long stitches and knit it. Knit next 2 long stitches.

Get stuck when it comes to row 4–it just doesn’t work. HELP!

It looks like the stitches are there for row 4. The P1 in the repeatin row 3 is worked with the stitch 2rows below and the elongated sts are used for the cross. Is it doing the cross that’s causing the problem? The sts are elongated which makes it esier to get to the 4th st, place it at the tip of the left needle and knit it, then to move the 3rd st into position at the end of the left needle and knit it. Then you continue on with the other 2 elongated sts.

Yes, row 4 is the problem. The question was for my mother and I am trying to find out how to do it for her. I’ll try and find out what was happening and explain better her problem.
