I have not done set-in sleeves before and am at a loss as how to get the sleeves put in the cabled sweater I am making for my daughter. I need to know the entire procedure as the pattern only says “sew seams.” I know I do the shoulder seams first, but am now stuck. The sweater also has a hood on it that I am supposed to do after I sew the shoulder seams, should I do the sleeves before the hood or does it matter?
It probably doesn’t matter if you put the hood on first, but that’s an extra piece flopping around to get in the way if you do.
To put in the sleeves, mark the middle of the sleeve top and match it up with the shoulder seam. Do the same with the side and sleeve seams. Then use your favorite method of seaming. You may want to pin them together or go slowly so the edges match up as you sew them together.

I am doing this right now, so I chuckled when I saw your post. I do it just like she said. Line up all your edges, making sure you have middle of sleeve to the shoulder seam and also lined up in the armpit area. Then you just go slowly. The type of seam I use depends on the thickness of the fabric. I tend to mostly use the invisible seaming method (right sides together). There are good videos of the different methods in the video section of this site.
Thank you for the suggestions. I think I was making it out to be harder than necessary. You also gave me a good idea about the seams and I used a backstitched seam. I wasn’t happy with the other method I had used so I took it out and backstitched instead and I am much happier with the look of the backstitched seam. I think I may actually be able to finish this in time to start a new sweater for my younger daughter in time for Christmas! :happydance:
