So I’m in the middle of this and I can’t go on because I can’t seem to wrap my head around this part. Anyone help?
It says:
“Shape Armhole and Front Slope: Bind off 4 sts at beg and dec 1 st at end of next row-25 (27, 29) sts. Work 1 row even. Dec 1 st at armhole edge on next 4 rows AND AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st at neck edge every 4th row from previous dec 8 (9, 10) more times-13 (14, 15) sts. Work even until armhole measures same as back to shoulder, end P row.”
What does “AND AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st at neck edge every 4th row from previous dec 8 (9, 10) more times-13 (14, 15) sts.” mean? Every 4th row of what decrease? The armhole ones? And when do I start? After the 4th row? If so, why does it specify “at the same time”? Why not just say decrease neck edge after armhole decreases? Or am I confusing the issue? I understand the first part; I just need to know when to do the neck decreases and do I work even until every 4th row to make another neck decrease? And do I do this 9 times (I’m using the medium measurement)? :??

On the first row, you’ll bind off 4 st at the armhole edge and dec one st at the end of that row, the neck.
Work one row without dec.
Since the rate of decrease is different at the arm edge and the neck edge, they say ‘at the same time’ because you are working the dec simultaneously, but on different rows.
The best thing to do to keep track is to make a list of rows and mark which ones you’ll decrease on the armhole side and which rows you’ll decrease on the neck edge
1 dec arm
2 dec arm
3 dec arm
4 dec arm dec neck
5
6
7
8 dec neck
9
10
11
12 dec neck
Etc. until you have as many dec done as you need for your size.
Hi everyone, I’m working on a men cardigan at the moment and The book come up with the shape armholes and front slope that I’m not quite understand what I suppose to do. Please help.
So It says this:
Shape armhole and front slope:
Keep patt correct, cast off 6 (8-9-10) sts at beg of the next row … 44(48-51-55) sts.
Work 1 row
Dec one st armhole edge in every row 3(3-5-7) times, then in every alt row 2(4-3-3) times, AT THE SAME TIME dec one st at front edge in the next row, then every alt row 5(6-7-8) times, then in every 4th row 8times …25(26-27-28) sts rem
Work 1 row
Shape shoulder
Cast off 8(9-9-9) sts at beg next and alt row.
Work 1 row.
Cast off 9(8-9-10)
Hi Mandy and Welcome to KH!
Which size are you making? The first, 2nd, 3rd or 4th?
We’d love to see a photo of the pattern too. Can you give us a pattern name?
Very good looking cardigan.
Call the first cast off of 8sts row 1. Work row 2 in pattern.
The decreases at the armhole are on rows 3,4,5 and then 7,9,11,and 13.
At the same time the front slope decreases are on rows 3,5,7,9,11,13,15,
then 19,23,27,31,35,39,43,47.
That gets you to 26sts
Cast off 9sts on row 49 and 51 and cast off 8sts on row 53.
I just saw your second post as a new topic. (I actually tried to move this post to its own topic earlier but ran into a balky program.)
This sounds like the left front as you would wear the cardigan. The armhole is at the beginning of the RS row and the front slope at the end of the RS row. That makes sense with the cast off of 8sts at the very beginning being the underarm.
