Hi, first post here! So I’m knitting a sweater for my mom’s Yorkie. It’s my first sweater of any kind and it’s been challenging but fun. I was doing fine until I got to the legs. My pattern just says to bind off for the leg holes, then work both legs at the same time with separate balls of yarn.
But where do I start with each new ball? Do I cast on the 4 stitches that I bound off in the previous row? Do I pick up stitches around where I bound off?
Here’s the leg section of the pattern. I’m doing the smallest size.
Leg Openings: 1st row: (RS). Pat across 5 (5-7-11-
12) sts. Cast off next 4 (6-6-10-12) sts. Pat across 45
(55-63-87-113) sts (including st on needle after cast off).
Cast off next 4 (6-6-10-12) sts. Pat to end of row.
Note: Work all leg sections at the same time using a
separate ball of yarn for each section.
Beg with a WS row, work 1 (1½-1½-2½-3) ins [2.5 (4-
4-6-7.5) cm] in pat from cast off sts, ending with RS
facing for next row.
Welcome to KH!
You won’t be casting on or picking up sts at the leg opening yet.
When you get to the gap created by the bound off sts, drop the working yarn strand. Skip over the gap and attach the new strand to the middle section of the sweater. You can just hold the new strand next to the sts on the left needle while you knit the first couple of sts. Leave about a 6" tail to weave in later. Don’t worry if the first stitch is loose. You can always snug it up by pulling on the yarn tail.
Repeat this process when you come to the second gap.
Thank you so much! That clears things up. So I knit normally until I get to the first leg hole, ignore it and knit the middle with ball 2 and then when I get to the second leg hole I ignore it too and finish the row with ball 3? So I’m no actually doing the legs right now, I’m just making the holes to do them later?
Yes, you’re beginning the holes for the legs. You’ll work this way for 1" and then there’s probably a
joining row where you cast on over the same area as the cast offs.
There is a joining row next. I was thinking I was working the legs now and was very confused. There’s a leg edging section later and I didn’t realize that meant the whole leg and not just the edge. Thank you!
