Need help with hat pattern!

I just started knitting and this is only my second project. Its a baby hat. I was doing fine until here…

Shape top: Keeping in contiuity of pattern of 6 ST st rows with CA and 4 k rows with CB shape the top as follows:

Row 1: k1, *k2tog, k6: repeat from * Accross 57
Row 2: Work even in pattern
Row 3: K1 *k2tog, k5, repeat from * accross 49
Row 4, 6,8,10 & 12 repeat row 3
Row 5: k1 *k2tog, k4, repeat from * accross 41

The first problem is I don’t know what they mean by “work even in pattern” so I don’t know what to do for row 2. Also I realize the stitches are decreasing each row, am I supposed to be decreasing or is the k 2 together decreasing it?
I hope that makes sense.
Thanks in advance!

‘work even in pattern’ just means follow whatever pattern is established, without increasing or decreasing.

Yes, the k2tog is your decrease- it takes 2 stitches and turns them into 1.

Yes ‘work even’ just meens carry on without doing anything special.
so you if were working in stockinett, that would make row 2 a purl row as it follows a knit row.

Thank you both for your help, I think I understand now!
