Need help with Garter Yoke Vest Pattern

[FONT=Courier][SIZE=2][FONT=Courier][SIZE=2]I already posted this on Ravelry - but so far the one response didn’t really help me…so…
Hi all,
I’m stuck in a section of the pattern. The instructions state:
Knit in garter stitch on these 12 (11, 11) sts until 3 (3 1/2, 3 1/2)” from bound off neck sts. Cast on 8 (9, 9) sts at front edge. Knit in garter stitch until front armhole measures the same as back armhole, and cast on 3 (6, 8) sts at armhole edge.
I got to the point where I’m 3” from the bound off neck sts - but……
What do they mean by the rest, “cast on 8 sts at front edge…”
I just can’t picture what I’m supposed to do here…so I have to admit - I’m totally stumped! I’ve only been knitting a year or so, and this is my first garment, so I went with what I thought was an easy vest.
Thanks
Linda Wilkins

You cast on sts at the beg of the row. With the sts in your left hand, do a knit or cable caston, then knit over both the new and the old stitches.

I get it! If I’m picturing it right, it’s going to add a bit to the section to taper it where it will lay over the shoulder, rather than keep the shoulder just a straight strip.
I can’t wait to get home from work now to try it.
Thanks so much Sue!
