First off I’d like to say hello, I’m new here.
Now, I’m making these flip-top mittens. The page I’m stuck on is in the attachment. It’s a little blurry, but hopefully you can still read it.
This project is knitted on straight needles, and apparently sewed up once it’s done.
I’m stuck on this one part. I have finished knitting the thumb, while the hand parts are on stitch holders. Here’s the part:

Return hand stitches to needle if you placed them on holders. Rejoin yarn with right side facing to beginning of thumb gap, pick up and knit 3 stitches from base of thumb, knit to end-40 stitches.
If I knit those two hand parts together over the thumb, my thumb doesn’t fit well in the glove, I end up getting like 2" of thumb sticking out! (which should not be the case since the thumb is the correct length.) But if I knit across where the side that’s supposed to be sewed up later, it gets too tight on the needle because I’m knitting flat instead of knitting in the round.
I’ll post pics of it if you need them
Please help knitsters!
