Need help with Dec 1 st each side every other row

I’m knitting a sweater and am at the point where I’m shaping the armholes. The instructions say to Dec 1 st each side every other row 9 times. The pattern is stockinette. Each side means right side, wrong side, correct? But if it is every other row, then I’m always on the right side, the knit side. I’m so confused!

If your first dec row is a knit row then every other row would be a knit row, so it would be row 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, and row 17.

Welcome!
Decrease at the beginning and the end of the row, the right and left edges. That can be every RS row, 2 decreases per row.

What they mean is to decrease 1 st at both edges every other row. So if your “Row 1” is a knit row, then you would do a decrease at the beginning and end of every knit row (which would be every other row)
