Need help with cable problem

Hi all,
I’m new to this site and am so glad I’ve found it! I am looking for help with a cabled shrug that I am making. The problem that I’m having is that I am ending up with loose stitches on the left side of my cables. Almost like a line. I know there must be some sort of trick to fix this but I don’t know what it is. I may have to rip it out and start over cause I just don’t like the way it looks. Can you give me any suggestions? Thanks so much in advance!
Susan

It’s a common problem. I make a point to keep my yarn tight and the needles close together when I switch from the cable stitch to the background stitch, especially if it’s a purl background. I don’t know that there’s a ‘secret’ to it, though.

Ingrid’s idea is a great one. Another common thing that happens, is forgetting to put the yarn behind the cable needle when you knit (or in front of it for purling) off of the cable needle. Sometimes the yarn gets left behind the knitting needle. This can make your stitches loose, as well.

After decades of knitting I recently jumped on the cable bandwagon. I’ve found that K the last cable stitch tbl twists it just enough…along with giving the first P stitch a tug…to eliminate the loose stitches. (Depending on how stretchy my yarn is, I’ll also P tbl in the corresponding stitch on the WS, to ensure that twist.)
