Need help w/ pattern

This is my first attempt at making clothing and could use some help.

For the back yoke I casted on 88 stitches and St st until 10 1/2# long.

Front Yoke & Neck Shaping:
With RS facing, using larger needles pick up and knit 29 stitches along cast on edge of back; skip center 36 back neck sts; w/ 2nd ball of yarn pick up and knit remaining 29 stitches.

If I pick up the 29 stitches and skip the 36 stitches which equals to 65 so I would only have 23 sts remaining not 29. I am assuming that this is all being done on the cast on edge and not sure what I need to do.

Thanks for the help!
Shelly

Have you checked the pattern manufacturer’s website for errors in the pattern? It’s possible it’s a typo.

No, I did not. Thanks for the tip, I will go ahead and do that!

If you can’t find anything, then perhaps what you can do is just make sure you are picking stitches evenly. So if you have 88 stitches and they want you to skip the center 36 stitches (88-36=52) and 52/2= 26 sts to pick up and knit on each side.

Check to make sure you’re looking at the numbers for the same size.

Suzeeq is right, I was just about to come back and say the exact same thing! It’s easy to let you eye wonder to a different size, and the instructions are different.

Even if this ends up not being the case for you, it’s a good idea to photocopy your pattern and then take a highlighter and highlight all the instructions in the pattern pertaining to the size you are knitting.

I did check the pattern I don’t know how many times to see if I looked at the incorrect number, but no, I didn’t. As a matter of fact when I got to looking at all the numbers for the different sizes, none of them came out correct. So I am going to take ittybittypretty suggestion and pick up 26 on each end. I am also going to take her suggestion and make a photocopy.

Thanks for everyone’s help. Shelly

One more thought Shelly. You could pick up 29 sts on each side and leave the center 30 alone. You’ll just have to look at the garmet and decide what option you think is better.

It may be that they want you to pick up a few extra for ease, if that’s the case. Check the pattern later on; if you don’t have the right stitch number for that part then you may run into a problem.
