Need help understanding pattern instructions

I am working on a lace curtain pattern and am having a tough time getting it to knit up properly.
The instructions state the following:
"CO 198 sts.
Row 1: Sl 1, k1; work row 1 of Checkerboard Mesh to last two sts; end k2.
Cont to work selvedge sts as given in Row 1, for five repeats of the Checkerboard Mesh pattern."
Row 1 of Checkerboard Mesh: Row 1 and all WS rows; P.

Do the instructions above tell me to do the selvage stiches on just the WS rows? Or do I do the selvage stitches on all rows?

Any help would be great.
Thanks
Lisa

I read it as just on Row 1… but I would prolly slip one on all rows…this way both edges would be straighter and nicer looking

Your pattern says to Continue to workselvedge sts as given in Row 1. So I would continue working them.
