Need Help Shaping Neck

Hi! I’m working on the Classic Cardigan pattern from Bernat (http://freevintageknitting.com/patternbook/bernat137/six-classics-by-bernat-for-women) and this is my first sweater and I am having a bit of an issue. I’m unsure how to shape the neck. The directions are as follows:

SHAPE NECK: At the beg of the next row P (6-6-8-8-8) sts and slip these sts onto a holder, P to end of row. Continue to dec 1 st at arm edge in the same manner as before 6 times more, and AT THE SAME TIME, at neck edge bind off 2 sts 4 times. Sl remaining 2 sts onto a holder.

What I’m not understanding is the portion following is the “AT THE SAME TIME” part. How do I do this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Congrats on working on your first sweater!
Dec at the armhole edge, knit across to the neck edge, turn, bind off 2sts and purl to the end of the row. Repeat this for the given number of times.

Thank you so much for your response! My only concern is then why the stitch holder? I’m still using these 6 stitches when binding off, aren’t I?

Thanks again

No, the 6sts are held for the collar. They aren’t part of the bind off. Purl the 6sts, slip them to a holder or scrap yarn and then proceed on the remaining sts for the decreases and bind offs.

Ok great! I’ll give it a try. Thanks so much
