Need help reading pattern

I’m confused about where it says Work 20 sts in patt as set. What does that mean? What is the pattern and what is the set? Some breakdown of this would be helpful. Beginner here, trying to translate this. Thx!

Flap
Using Cable Cast On or Knitted Cast On, CO 24 sts using CC1, 4 sts using MC, 4 sts using CC1, 4 sts using MC, 4 sts using CC1. 40 sts.

Cont as follows, working colors as set to form vertical stripes:

K 3 rows.

Next Row [WS]: K20, yo, k2tog, k to end.

K 2 rows.

Beg with a RS row, work 4 rows in stockinette st.

Next Row [RS]: Work 20 sts in patt as set, work first row of chosen chart over next 16 sts, k4.

Work next 23 rows in patt as set, working through rem 23 rows of chosen chart.

Work 5 more rows in stockinette st. Break yarn.

Working in pattern as set means to work the pattern as you have been doing up to that point. The pattern was “set” when you worked these rows:

K 3 rows.

Next Row [WS]: K20, yo, k2tog, k to end.

K 2 rows.

Beg with a RS row, work 4 rows in stockinette st.

So as you work your chart rows, continue working the first set of stitches before the chart as you have been.

Ok, that’s what I was thinking.

Any idea why there’s a yo, k2tog in the middle of one row?

Also, when it says to work in stockinette for 4 rows, that just means k, p, k, p, right?

The yo, k2tog will give you a row of eyelets. Do you have the name of the pattern or a link to it?

Yes, stockinette is knit one row, purl one row.

Here is the link to it

I’m just trying to do it in one color for now.

What does this instruction mean?
Next Row [RS]: Work 20 sts in patt as set, work first row of chosen chart over next 16 sts, k4.

If I’m not working with a pattern from their chart, can I just knit that whole row?

This pattern is confusing…:oo:

The eyelets will be your button holes.

Since the charts are for color knitting, then you just work stockinette.
