Need help reading a pattern

I am working on a patch for a blanket and the pattern that I am having trouble understanding is as follows:

K1 *sl3, (k1, sl1 with yarn in back)2x, k1; rep from * across

Pattern doesn’t say if I need to slip a stitch knit wise or purl wise. Can someone please explain what this means?
Thanks!

If a pattern doesn’t specify, then it generally means slip purlwise.
