Need help reading a pattern

Hi, I’m having trouble reading a pattern - it’s a Wrap/shawl. The pattern reads:

Directions for Scarf given first, followed by Wrap in ().
CO 6 (7) sts.
First Half, Inc Rows:
Row 1: Purl
Row 2: K1, Knit in front and back of next st (inc 1), pm,
k4 (5)-7(8)sts.

What I don’t understand is the K4 (5)-7(8)sts piece. Should I knit 5 for the shawl? What is the 7(8) sts mean.

I’m confused. If anyone can help I would appreciate it very much.
Thanks!
diane

Row 2: K1, Knit in front and back of next st (inc 1), pm,
k4 (5)-7(8)sts.

Work the part in Blue only. The - 7(8)sts - is just information to tell you that you will have that many sts when you complete that row. (For the wrap you should end up with 8 sts.)

Thank you for the quick response! That makes sense to me.

Have a great day! diane
