Thanks in advance for helping this newbie. Brand new, making her first sweater. The first and second rows were done in class, with a teacher by my side, BUT … it’s the third row’s directions that are now confusing me. Help!
Row 1- k into the front and back of the first st (inc made), ince, slip marker, inc, k to within 1 st of next marker, rep at each marker to last st, inc. (I did this and understood the directions)
Row 2 was just purl.
The confusion:
Row 3-inc, k to within 1 st of next marker, inc, slip marker, inc, rep at each marker, k to last st, inc
Can someone please translate row 3 into English for me until I’ve got more practice reading knitting code? Thanks so much. I can’t keep knitting 'til I figure it out!
Is it a raglan sweater? That’s what this sounds like.
So you Increase then knit till there is 1 stitch before the marker, increase, slip the marker from left needle to right, increase. Then you knit to one stitch before the next marker and repeat ending with the end of row increase. It sounds like you are doing the KFB increase so you are basically doing it on the stitch on either side of the marker.
I can’t thank you enough for your prompt reply! It does indeed make sense and I see now how it’s slightly different from the first row which had me increasing both (there were 2) stitches before the first marker. In row 3, however, I will just knit, only increasing before/after the markers. Again, I can’t thank you enough for your help. So appreciated!
I saw that! (ten points for me, huh!? :^)) So … the big question, if the pattern wants me to increase the first stitch (and last) in the row, do they tell me that by starting with “inc?” That’s the part that threw me. The row 1 instructions made sense because they told me to knit a stitch a stitch and increase it, but the Row 3 instructions didn’t say it that nicely! So, for the future … when a row instruction starts with “inc,” should I assume that it means increase the first stitch?

I think row 1 has a typo in it - k into the front and back of the first st (inc made), inc, slip marker, inc, k to within 1 st of next marker, rep at each marker to last st, inc. - Or else it was just explaining what ‘inc’ means.
Jan, I just sent you an important questions about this, on private message. I’m trying to figure out if I was supposed to increase the last stitch there also. Could you reply? Thanks so much.
Yes it does, it says - “… rep at each marker to last st, inc.” Which means repeat everything between the * until you have one st left, then inc in it.
