Need help please

Hi, I have only started to knit these last 3 days and I’m in process of knitting a simple baby jumper for charity. Only thing is, I’m stuck trying to understand the pattern. I found knitting is fun but also stressful (I’ve only just recovered for adding more stitches when doing purl stitch  ).

Ok, so I need help with understanding this bit from the pattern:
Next row Rib 21. Cast off 26 stitches, rib 21.
Next row Rib 21. Cast on 26 stitches, rib 21.

From what it looks like, I think this bit is for adding the neck hole for the jumper.

Thanks before :knitting:

Hi, welcome to the forum! You may be right about the neck opening. Without knowing more it’s really hard to even make a good guess. Is it possible to link to the pattern or does it have a name? That would help.

Hi and welcome to KH!
Yes, the neck opening, that’s exactly right. Work in your rib pattern across 21 sts, work 2 more sts and the lift the first of those two over the second to cast off. Continue to cast off a total of 26sts and then continue on with the rib pattern. Turn at the end of the row and work back over the sts til you come to the gap at the cast off sts. Cast on 26sts using a knit or cable cast on, rib to the end of the row and you’ve got your neck opening.
Cable cast on and knitting on are both shown on the Free Videos tab at the top of the page under Cast Ons.
Sounds like a cute sweater, maybe front and back made in one piece. Try to relax and enjoy knitting it!

Thanks ever so much for the help salmonmac, I have that in mind but then thinking it might not be right and then thinking that the neck opening is probably too small as well. Nevertheless, I braved myself and did it last night just after posting this question, and you assured me now that I was actually doing the right thing :). I am way more relaxed and enjoyed knitting much more now compare to 3 days ago as I think I now got the hang of knitting. Will definitely do more projects when this one finished

Good for you! It’s important to go with your best interpretation and see what happens. If it’s not right, it can always be redone. glad it worked so well.

Hi, I’m doing a different project (baby cardigan) now but I’m confused yet again by understanding the pattern. Here’s most of the pattern:

BACK
With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 23 (25, 27) sts. Work in K1, p1 Rib until piece measures 1 in. (2.5 cm) from beg. Work in Garter st until Back measures 9 1/2 (10 1/2, 11 1/2) in. (24 (26.5, 29) cm) from beg. Bind off.

POCKET LINING (make 2)
With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 7 sts. Work in Garter st for 2 in. (5 cm). Transfer sts to holder.

RIGHT FRONT
With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 13 (15, 17) sts. Work in K1, p1 Rib until piece measures 1 in. (2.5 cm) from beg. Work in Garter st until piece measures 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beg; end with a WS row.
Pocket Welt
Next Row (RS): K3 (4, 5), p1, (k1, p1) 3 times, k3 (4, 5).
Next Row: K3 (4, 5), k1, (p1, k1) 3 times, k3 (4, 5).
Next Row: K3 (4, 5), bind off 7 sts, k3 (4, 5).
Next Row: K3 (4, 5), knit 7 sts of one Pocket Lining from holder, k3 (4, 5).
Work even until Right Front measures 7 1/2 (8 1/2, 9 1/2) in. (19 (21.5, 24) cm) from beg; end with a WS row.
Neck Shaping
Next Row (RS): Bind off 3 (4, 6) sts, k to end of row – 10 (11, 11) sts.
Decrease 1 st at neck edge every row 2 times – 8 (9, 9) sts. Work even until piece measures 9 1/2 (10 1/2, 11 1/2) in. (24.5 (26.5, 29) cm) from beg. Bind off.
Mark placement for 4 buttons: first button just above ribbing, top button 1/2 in. (1.5 cm) below beg of neck shaping, and 2 evenly spaced between.

I’ve done the back part, and now about to do the pocket lining. It does said I have to make 2 pocket linings then transfer the stitches to stitch holders. After I transfer the stitches to a stitch holder what do I do with the yarn? Do I have to tied the yarn and cut it after I finished doing the pocket linings before doing the right front and pocket welt ? Or do I actually meant to continue on to do the right front and pocket welt and then pick the stitches from the stitch holder later on?

Although it does says easy on the pattern but it’s not so easy to understand the pattern from a novice knitter. Hope my question is clear enough and someone will be able to help :D. Thanks a milion.

I’m bumping this up so maybe someone will see it and respond. I bet most people thought you were commenting on your original post and didn’t read your last comment. That’s why it’s a good idea to start a new post for a new project.

Anywhooo, someone will be along soon to answer your question.

Thanks very much Antares for the help!
Make the 2 pocket linings and then cut the yarn on each one leaving about a 6 inch tail to weave in later. Start the front with the directions:

You’ll use the pocket lining when you get to the bolded part above, one on the left front and one on the right. Yes, it’s a little funny until you’ve done a set of pockets because it’s not obvious. When you see it work out, it’s actually quite neat.
