I purchased this skein of yarn second-hand. It did not come with a label. And I’m new to knitting. So, I don’t know what type of yarn it is. I’m attaching a picture. Maybe someone can help me identify it.
Could you also suggest an appropriate needle size? And maybe some possible pattern(s) which would be suitable for this type of yarn (I only have this one skein).
It’s hard to tell from the picture, but it looks to me like it might be some type of tulle ribbon yarn. I found a couple that might be somewhat similar to yours in terms of the texture/weight:

Both of these are listed as bulky weight yarns, and I would say that yours probably fits into that category as well.
You could try working swatches on a couple of different needle sizes to test the kind of fabric it creates, and then go with a needle size that works for you. I’m not sure how to recommend a pattern for you, since you only have the one skein and you don’t know yet how much yarn you will be using (since this will depend partially on the needle size you go with, it might be easier to determine a pattern once you know how it knits up).
Perhaps someone else here has used a similar yarn in the past and can give you some suggestions on what to do with it. 
It looks like some kind of tube or flat ribbony yarn. It’s loosely spun and it looks like it would be bulky.
I guess it would be a sort of ribbon yarn. It is made of a light mesh material which is rolled into a loose tube.
So, since it would be classified as a bulky yarn, I should use a larger needle?
Also, are there certain stitches that work better for a ribbon-type yarn?
I’m thinking that I might be able to make a cowl with the skein I have.
Yes, you’d use larger needles. You may have to experiment to see which one creates a fabric you like. I’d start with a US 10 and go from there.
Also don’t know if you have enough for a project, but a cowl is small so maybe that would work.
