Need help, finished but I not yet joined, crochet sweater is 5” too narrow

Hi, I have crocheted a sweater that is supposed to be 47 inches wide and I’ve completed the front and back panel and it’s only 42 inches wide. I don’t believe that I’ll be able to block it to get what I need without ruining the pattern any ideas for me?

The first sleeve was also too narrow . I did try blocking it and it is too airy. See bottom photo

You’ve worked this so well in such a lovely stitch pattern.
One possibility for the body of the sweater is to add a gusset at each side. Crochet panels for each side from the underarm to the hem. These could be worked lengthwise or from one edge to the other. This will also open up the sleeve opening.
If the body above the split for the arms is wide enough you’ll be ok. If not you may need to increase the width there by ripping out and redoing just that part.
The sleeves might work with a gusset but it might be better to redo those from the beginning at a larger size if possible.
What is the name of your pattern and designer? What have you marked or joined with stitch markers at the right side in your photo?

Thanks for replying. The name of the pattern is long loop cardigan. I’m trying to work a gas it straight into the back panel by adding 12 stitches of just single Crochet. I’m not in love with that, but I don’t know if I should try to do that or try to add just create two long panels with the long loop pattern then attach them either way. I can’t decide if I’m gonna add the long loop into the panel or not what’s your suggestion?

I already ripped apart the sleeve and am redoing it

You could work the side panels which don’t need to be very wide in the same pattern or something simpler. Either will work. I once added a gusset in 2x2 rib in the same places to an aran patterned coat. It looked like part of the jacket design when seamed in.
Try out some alternatives on a swatch just to see if you have a preference. It doesn’t have to be a large swatch, just enough to give you an idea of the look next to the body of the sweater.
Maybe this one?

If it is indeed the one @salmonmac found, you could do 2 1/2-3" side panels in the contrast color. Then it would look more like an intentional design detail. If you don’t want to do that, I would use the same stitch pattern as the rest of the body.

Those wide front bands will be giving you a good amount more room…have you accounted for that? It might help to lay your pieces out on top of a cardigan that you know fits, to better see how much you need to add where.

I would wait on the sleeves until you’ve figured out what to do about the body, to be certain the sleeves will fit. This alteration will make the armholes a lot bigger, and you may need to reshape the sleeve to match.

It is this one, but the sweater, not the cardigan

Thanks I am trying to crochet it directly into the side right now of the back, but I will also try a few swatches to see if that works. Also, I’ll let y’all know.

It is not the cardi

It’s this one

So I am using one color

I mean I may just switch to the cardigan if I have to frog it
