Need help deciphering pattern please

Hey guys.

I have been working on the “tempting” sweater from knitty. I’ve got the body done but now I’m stuck. I have a few questions about how to proceed. I have pasted the pattern in and highlighted my questions in red. Any help will be appreciated!!! :XX: Until then, I’ll get to work on the sleeves.

Rnd 1: [K2, p2] to end. This rnd forms 2x2 rib.
Cont in 2x2 rib until work measures 13 [14,15,16,17] inches. HERE is where I am…basically nowhere!

Place next 12 [14,16,18,20] sts on waste yarn, work across 60[66, 74, 82, 88] sts, place next 12 [14,16,18,20] sts on waste yarn, work to end of rnd. Set aside. Do not break yarn. Ok, I know about putting stitches on the waste yarn to attach the sleeves later, but if I move off those 12 stitches, how am I supposed to get my yarn over to work across 60? It would just have a big string right in the middle of the work???

Sleeve (make 2)
With dpns, CO 52 [60, 68, 76, 82] sts. Place marker and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.
Work in 2x2 rib until work measures 2.5[3, 3.5, 4, 4.5] inches. Place next 12[14,16,18,20] sts on waste yarn. Place all rem sts on spare dpns, break yarn, leaving a long tail. Set aside. Same issue as above.

Join Sleeves to Body
NOTE: Read through this entire step before beginning.
Using circular needle and ball of yarn attached to body, and working in 2x2 rib as set, work across 40[46, 52, 58, 64] sts of one sleeve, work across 60[66, 74, 82, 88] sts of front of body, work across 40[46, 52, 58, 64] sts of second sleeve, work across 60[66, 74, 82, 88] sts of back of body. Does this mean I place the sleeves onto the same needle as the body now and work around? For example, since it starts with working the sleeve, I would put those stitches on the same needle as the body so when I get to working the 60 across on the body they attach?
There should now be 200[224, 252, 280, 304] sts on the circular needle, and the sleeves and body should be joined, ready for the yoke to be worked. At the underarms, the sts on waste yarn from the body and from the sleeves will be opposite each other. These sts will be joined later on.

Yoke
If desired, switch to a longer circular needle at this point.
Cont in rib patt as set until work measures 5[6, 7, 8, 9] inches from joining point.
Sizes S, M, XL, and XXL only: Next Row: [YO, k2tog, YO, k2tog, k2, p2] around.
Size L only: Next Round: K2, [YO, k2tog, YO, k2tog, p2, k2] to last 2 sts, p2.
All sizes: Work in 2x2 rib for 5 more rows. BO all sts in patt.

FINISHING
Turn work inside out. Remove underarm sts of one sleeve from waste yarn and place on a dpn. Remove corresponding underarm sts of body from waste yarn and place on second dpn. Join body sts to sleeve sts using three-needle BO and long tail from sleeve. Join second underarm in the same way.

Weave in all ends.

I just did this pattern so I’ll try to help…

Place next 12 [14,16,18,20] sts on waste yarn, work across 60[66, 74, 82, 88] sts, place next 12 [14,16,18,20] sts on waste yarn, work to end of rnd. Set aside. Do not break yarn. Ok, I know about putting stitches on the waste yarn to attach the sleeves later, but if I move off those 12 stitches, how am I supposed to get my yarn over to work across 60? It would just have a big string right in the middle of the work???

I can’t figure out the quote thingy.

When I did this I think I did it wrong! I carried the yarn over and did have a big string in the middle. It didn’t work too well. I think that you should break the yarn after working across the first 60, and then re-attach it and work to the end of the round. That is how I would do it if I had to do it again.

This shouldn’t be the same issue, because you’re not continuing to work with that yarn. After you use the waste yarn, you’re just putting the rest of the stitches on dpns.

Just knit them onto the needle–pretend like the sleeve needles are the left needle (ignore the left side of your circular) and knit them on to the circular with the right needle. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks Mer! I still have one sleeve to go :XX: , so it might be a bit before I try the join…I’ll let you know how it goes.
