Need Help changing yarn

I am working on a shrug and I have come to the end of a row and do not have enough yarn to do another row. My teacher said to take the new yarn, leave a 4 inch tail and tie on to the work.

My problem is that when I start working on the next row, the two “tails” get in the way and then look as if I am putting on three stitches instead of one.

am I doing something wrong? Should I make the “tail” on the wip shorter than the new yarn??

right now, I have stopped, because my next lesson is next Saturday and I can’t get by there during the week (she closes before I get off work).

Help!!!

If you scroll down this page… http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/misc.php
you’ll see a video for joining new yarn. that’s what I used

Hope that helps
