Need Help Altering Gaiter Pattern

I’ve decided to go with a neck warmer instead of a scarf for my SIL. I found this pattern and think it’s perfect [I]except[/I] I would like to knit it flat so she could button it around her neck instead of slipping it over her head.

I have yet to knit anything with buttons or button holes. Can anyone suggest how to adapt this pattern?
