Need help adding a stitch

I am new to knitting. I am starting my second knitting project. The pattern uses LionBrand Velvetspun. I am supposed to cast-on one stitch then Knit into front & back of first stitch. My problem is that after I knit into front & back the stitches are so tight I can’t get my needles on for the second row. I keep trying to make them looser, but its not working!

Help!!

Try using a larger needle to make the Knit front and back sts, then the regular one for the next row. Or CO 2 sts; I often do that when the pattern is to CO 1 or 3 then increase. I start with 2, 3 or 5, just skipping the first increase and going on the the row after that.
