Need all opinions about this baby gift pattern please

I’m still undecided about the baby blanket I need to knit and need your opinions. Is Spencer the Elephant Baby adorable or too silly to give as a gift?

Taste in this type of thing is so subjective, and you know the folks this is intended for. Since you asked, though, I don’t like it much. May be just a ‘me’ thing though.

Don’t hate me for saying this but, he looks like he’s hung over to me. Something about the eyes. It’s not my favorite. I think a more traditional one would be better, that way it’s more heirloom.

Thanks for the quick responses, and your honesty. I totally understand what you’re saying, I was actually leaning towards something like feather & fan.

The reason I’m considering this instead, is I found out they’re decorating the baby room in a jungle animal theme. I can picture a 2-yr old walking around with this, and it being a loved blankie. I’d make it light grey with dark grey trim though, the pink is a bit much (and what if it’s a boy?!).

Please continue with your initial, honest opinions.

i personally love the elephant blanket bc it is just adorable
but, i am working on a white baby blanket in a fans and laces pattern and it looks amazing so, go with what you think!

I think he is cute…

But I do have to agree with Debkcs, it is all subject to taste. I think if the person receiving it has the baby room decked out in Elephant…go for it…otherwise…there are plenty of nice patterns that might go better…

I like it… it’s cute! But I can see how others wouldn’t. So I’d go with what you think the parents would like the best.

Spencer’s adorable! Especially if you did him in gray and he was sitting in a jungle room. Now, I really, really love elephants, so take that into consideration. How many kids carry their baby blankets around for years as a “security blanket”? I think Spencer would be a great security blanket - I could see him more in that role for a 3 year old than a traditional baby blanket, actually.

I don’t much like it. The trunk doesn’t look like it is fastened down except on the tip. This might be a concern if the child gets it wrapped around his neck. I personally I like the Feather and Fan.

It’s not my favorite… But do what you think the parents would like.

Maybe if you don’t know for sure, you could do a more traditional blanket in a really non tradition “jungle” color.

I don’t really like it. I prefer more traditional things, but I do like bright colors for babies and children.

I think it’s cute, especially if the parents are doing a jungle theme, but I agree with most, it would depend on the parents’ taste. I know I have one couple who would absolutely love this for their child, but another couple who would probably disown me, so it all depends.

I think he is cute! I can definitely see him being a toddlers blankie that is carried around everywhere. You know the parents and what they would or wouldn’t like, just trust your instincts!

I can see your point about the elephant theme in the room, but I don’t think Spencer is a particularly cute or adorable looking example of an elephant. As others have said, its a subjective thing, but to my mind just the fact that he’s an elephant wouldn’t mean I’d knit him for a jungle room. For me, he’d have to look the RIGHT elephant and have a bit of artistic appeal too.

I’d prefer a traditionally shaped blanket, in modern styling - no lace stitches - and plenty of well combined colours.

If you wanted to make something with the elephant theme, there’s a cute elephant toy in “Last Minute Knitted Gifts”.

Given that you said the room is being done in a jungle motif, it may be a cute addition. Maybe there is a compromise…could you find an elephant picture and load it here: http://www.microrevolt.org/knitPro/to get a graph and stitch the elephant image into a blanket?

Just saw that the room is a jungle theme. Maybe you could knit a cute animal or two.

I know the book Animal Knits by Zoe Mellor has a blanket with animals in it. I can’t find a preview though. I saw it on Ravelry.

so i am in th eminority again then. i love the elephant. its wacky and just down my street. but as th eothers have said its personal taste. i can be a bit off th ewall most of the time hebce i love the eyes etc. but i wouldnt do that for a baby. i’d give it as a joke to an adult.
