Need a refresher

Its been a little while since I have picked up my needles but I do remember how to knit. I am having trouble with this pattern.

I can’t remember how to increase without leaving a hole.

“Join knitting and work in the round in 1x1 rib for 1.5”, increasing 4 sts. evenly around on last ribbed row"

What type of increase are you doing? If you’re doing the M1 where you pick up the yarn between the needles you twist the stitch to decrease the likelihood of holes.

It doesn’t exactly say what kind of increase to use. I just don’t want any holes to show. from what the pattern says I am only adding the increase on the last row.

I’d suggest using one of the M1 increases–lift the bar between the stitches from back to front and knit into the loop that’s in the front of the needle.

There are marvelous free videos on the tab at the top of this page (see increases) that will show you the increases that Jan and Ingrid have recommended … and more. The videos are very useful when you are trying to remember techniques or looking for a variation on one you know.

I use those videos when I knit just about anything. They are a life/project saver for sure. I just wasn’t sure which one pertained to the project at hand. I am beginning to dislike incomplete patterns that don’t mention which increase or decrease to use.

Usually a pattern will define the terms used in the section betwen yarn/needle information and cast on instructions. If it doesn’t say, then use the one you’re most comfortable with.

Ok I am confuzzled. I got the increases figured out and did the one that Ingrid suggested. This one works perfectly and doesn’t show.

The part I am confused on is the skull part. I got the 2nd color started without any trouble. I finished the row on the other 2 needles with the main color since it looked to me like the skull was only on one side. Maybe this is what is confusing me but the 2 colors are on opposite sides of the same needle. Am I doing it wrong or is this just the nature of the beast.

I think I figured out what I need to do.
