Neck shaping confusion

Hello!

I’m probably way over thinking this pattern, but I’m totally confused and help would be very much appreciated. It is VERY possible that I have simply been looking at this too closely for way too many hours and have got myself confused unnecessarily.

Pattern: 14705 Setesdal OL-Genseren

I’m doing the child’s split neck pullover with braid.

The pattern says:

“Next rnd, work first 36 sts as set, C OFF the next 17 sts for neck opening, then work to the end of the rnd. Cut yarns and sl left front shoulder sts from left needle to right needle. Reattach yarns and, working back and forth, beg Rs at front neck edges. Cont pattern and C OFF 3 sts at the beg of first 4 Rs, 2 sts at the beg of next 2 Rs, then dec 1 st at the beg and end of every other R twice."

“Next rnd, work first 36 sts as set, C OFF the next 17 sts for neck opening, then work to the end of the rnd. Cut yarns and sl left front shoulder sts from left needle to right needle.” Okay, at this point, if I am reading correctly, I have the back of the sweater on one needle and the two front panels on the right needle. Is this correct?

“Reattach yarns and, working back and forth, beg Rs at front neck edges.” I’m totally lost here. If I’ve just moved the Left shoulder stitches to the right needle, that means that I am reattaching the yarn where the armhole will be steeked in later? Also, since I haven’t started the back neck shaping, why not knit this as one large flat piece? The armholes will be steeked at the end, so I don’t need to worry about their shaping at the moment. Or am I missing something?

To begin the Rs rows on the neck edges works fine for the left side, but wouldn’t that have me knitting backwards on the right shoulder side?

“Cont pattern and C OFF 3 sts at the beg of first 4 Rs, 2 sts at the beg of next 2 Rs, then dec 1 st at the beg and end of every other R twice." Again, relating to the question about beginning the Rs rows at the neck edges, how does this work for the right shoulder side?

Hopefully these questions aren’t totally confusing. I’ve tried to make it as clear in words as I can. Sorry for the confusion and thank you so much for reading!

This is knit in the round and you presumably have a beginning of round marker at the left underarm (left as you wear the sweater). Starting at the marker, you’ve knit the left shoulder, cast off the 17sts and knit around to this beg of round marker. Now, slip the left front shoulder sts (these would ordinarily be the next ones to knit) from the left needle to the right needle without knitting them. You have one piece consisting of the right shoulder, back, old beg of round marker, and then left shoulder.

You’re now at the gap created by the bound off sts. Reattach the yarn at the right shoulder and begin working flat and working the bind offs.

I’ll try drawing a diagram and post it.

Thank you so much, Salmonmac! I was looking at it backwards (the left shoulder as the left side as I look at it as opposed to if I was wearing it). That diagram is awesome! I was finally able to visualise it. You’re a life saver!

Also, after a good nights sleep I came back and read the abbreviations again. Rs is “rows” in this pattern and RS is “right side”. So I was reading this “beg Rs at front neck edges" as “begin right side rows at front neck edges.”

I feel a bit stupid now headdesk :woman_facepalming:

Thanks again, Salmonmac :green_heart:

No doubt that a good night’s sleep and a fresh eye on these things help out enormously. Lovely pattern. Enjoy finishing up!
