Neck edge

Here’s a video for picking up sts and knitting.

Almost there! You’ve done well on a first sweater.
Start at the right front (the right side of the neck as you would wear the sweater) then proceed around the back and finally down the left front. It’ll help to divide each part into smaller segments, halves or fourths with markers in order to keep on track.
Follow the instructions to knit the next row increasing across the back sts. You can use you favorite increase here or a Make 1.
The only sts not included here are the front center 10sts.

I accidentally started in the left side as if I was wearing it , does that matter and what does it mean by the 10 centre stitches please

I have undone that and now started on the right side one I reach the top before I go across the top of the neck , or do I cast off a start on the left hand side with my other needle , I am using circular needles 3.25 as stated ? Hope this make sense!!

Starting up the right side continue across the back sts and then down the left side of the neck. This is the first row and should finish with about 174sts. Now you’re going to turn as you would at the end of the row and work back according to the pattern directions.

There should be 10sts at the front center of the neck. Those sts won’t be picked up. You won’t be knitting the collar in the round but instead, back and forth with a gap at those center 10 sts.

I’ve underlined the 10 center sts in red in the photo.

Thank you for your help. I am working with a circular needle , so I only use the one needle to pick
up the 174 stitches ?

I don’t think my jumper going to look like the modelled one :see_no_evil::joy:

Yes, you only need one circular needle assuming it will hold 174sts. I’m sure your first sweater is going to be great. It was an adventure into the unknown and now you’ve all but done it! Good work.

I have now got 174 stitches on my needle and down to the bottom where the centre ten stitches are , which I haven’t touch . What do I do next, I don’t really understand. It says Next Row Knit to end (7) sets evenly across centre back neck sets? . I am still using one needle do I start using two , I am a bit confused :woman_shrugging:

Good. Now turn as you would at the end of a row and work back across those 174sts. When you get to the sts that were picked up across the back increase by 7sts. These 7 sts should be distributed across the 52 back sts so about one increase every 7sts. The increased sts don’t have to be precisely distributed just not clustered in one place.

If you picked up sts on a circular needle, then just use the needle at the other end of the circular. Make sure your sts aren’t too crowded however. That just makes it a struggle. If the sts are tightly crowded, knit this next row onto a longer circular.

Hi ,

I have finished the neckline , but haven’t cast off yet
Firstly do I cast off at this stage ?
At the moment I have sewed the shoulders together only

I don’t understand the last bit , I need it step by step
Hope you can help . Pat

The neckband which you still have on the needles needs to be long enough (measured from picked up sts to live sts on the needle) to fill in the gap at the center front. The side edges will eventually be stitch down to the center gap, one side overlapping the other.

So don’t bind off until you have knit a long enough piece to fill the gap. Then you will bind off.
Too short a neckband will have to be stretched too much in the gap, too long a neckband won’t ease into the gap.

The arrow on the left in the neckband indicated the direction of knitting.
