I am making this shawl (and I am not quite there yet) but the instructions for the bind off have me a little mixed up. The bind off is 12 rows, but not the all the stiches, then there is a centre part which I assume is for the middle spine part, okay- but what do I do with the rest of the row? Sorry if this seems elementary- but I just can’t get my head around what to do.https://www.cascadeyarns.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/DK726_Heritage6_NautilusCrescentShawl.pdf

Hello
The lace is an applied border and you will work perpendicular to the shawl stitches, mostly on the new set of 8 stitches cast on.
Whilst you work the new cast on stitches the last row of the shawl stitches will just sit on your needle, mostly unworked whilst you work the 12 rows of lace. The lace edge joins to the shawl by working 2 together on the given rows in the lace pattern . 7 of the shawl stitches are used up for each lace pattern repeat, eventually all the shawl stitches will be used up.
You can watch tutorials on applied border to get the idea although the lace pattern won’t be exactly the same. Here’s one
It’s probably one of those things that makes more sense when it’s on the needles and youve worked some of it. It can feel a little odd changing the direction of knitting but as it progresses it will make sense. A life line in your last row of shawl stitches would be a great help, and perhaps a removable marker to denote the 7 shawl stitches which will be used (each 12 row lace repeat) to reduce confusion over how many you have used so far whilst you are working.
Hope this helps
So every time I turn the work it is a new row?
Yes, you’ll be working little mini rows of about 8 or 10 stitches (the stitch count in the lace pattern changes), side on to your main shawl. The back and forth across those 8 or 10 stitches will make the little triangle lace pattern and will just take up 7 of the shawl stitches. Then you will repeat the whole thing and it will work another triangle and another 7 stitches of the shawl.
You will eventually reach the end of the shawl row.
I am still increasing- but I think I am going to put this project on hold for now- I fixed and frogged all day! Since frogging, I don’t know where my markers go and I don’t really know what row of my 4 row repeat I am on…Somewhere I did my yarn overs wrong (put them in the wrong spot, and then I had two holes in my spirals- my head is stewing, I hope this soon becomes clear to me- but maybe putting it down is the best thing…
Ugh, having a fixing and frogging day is a drain. Putting aside for a bit sounds good. I did that with my latest project after a similar experience and when I went back everything seemed so much easier.
You might find it all makes sense if you leave it a while and then you can get the markers back in place.
When you get back to it and have worked up to the border, definitely put a lifeline in your last row! Then if you find the border a bit tricky at first, you won’t risk losing all your hard work up to that point.
I got my stitch markers back in place and now I am just continuing to increase at last check I had 322 stitches. Thank you for the advice to add a lifeline. I will be sure to do that P.S- This shawl would be seriously small the pattern calls for 3.75 mm needle- and I am using 5.5 mm and it is still small
That’s great news, I knew you’d manage the get your markers back in.
